My (pronounced Me-ee) has been a special student at CDS since 2014. My is 18 years old. She is Deaf and faces physical challenges that require her to use a walker or wheelchair. Her fingers are not flexible, so it is difficult for her to hold objects. My is the first child in a family of three sisters. Her father died early from cancer. Her mother is often sick, so she does not have a stable job. Because of her health limitations, My’s studies are also difficult. However, thanks to her education at CDS, she can read and understand Vietnamese and use sign language to communicate with her mother and people around her.

Recently, My’s mother emotionally shared, “I went to the beach but forgot my phone at home. When I got home and opened my phone, I saw a missed call, and a message from someone saying ‘Mom went to the beach.’ When I asked, My smiled and signed that she had sent the text. I was very happy. As long as My can read and write like that, I know she will be a success.”

Earlier this month, My discovered some tumors that required hospitalization. Surgery was needed.
Before surgery, all the CDS teachers visited and encouraged her. My happily explained that she would try to return to school in September to continue studying. She wants to gain more knowledge and be with her friends for a few more years. And she wants the opportunity to one day take graduation photos.

Another CDS teacher called on the community (especially the Deaf community) to raise funds to support 100% of the surgery and additional services for My. Her surgery was successful, but she will now have to wait until the end of August to know the final diagnosis of her tumor.

When all the teachers visited My again after surgery, we saw that she was very happy. My would like to thank everyone for their love and support.
